After yesterday’s sale of club captain Keith Andrews to Blackurn Rovers, for a reported £1m, there was a striking void to fill at stadium:mk.

However, it didn’t take long before the club officially announced that defender Dean Lewington, standing in as skipper in Andrews’ recent absence, would take hold of the armband on a permanent basis.

The 24-year-old full-back is the club’s longest-serving player, and has racked up nearly 250 appearances.

Talking to the club’s official site about the appointment, Lewington said, ‘These are exciting times, this is a club that I love and I’ll be proud to be its captain.’

‘The club means everything to me; it’s the club that gave me a chance as a kid, the club I’ve played for my entire career and a club I’ve grown up with. It’s my club and I love it.’

However, the defender insisted his game would not be affected by the extra responsibilities.

‘Being captain won’t make a lot of difference to my game, you have to do a few more handshakes and a few more pictures but, other than that, my duties will be as they’ve always been,’ he went on.

‘Everyone has their own style and I’m sure it’s something that will just come naturally.’

Reiterating his manager’s comments from yesterday, Lewington also insisted that the club would survive in the absence of Andrews.

He said, ‘It would be a lie to say that Keith won’t be massively missed, he was best player in the league last year and he’ll be missed both on the pitch and off it. He was a big influence around the club.’

‘He’s been out of the team for the last few weeks so I think most people have expected it. It’s probably gone on a bit longer than people would have hoped but it’s best for everyone that it’s sorted now.’

‘The manager’s brought in Flavien Belson and we’ve got the likes of Alan Navarro and Peter Leven in the squad so we still have players that can fill the void.’

Lewington will lead the side out for the first time tomorrow at stadium:mk, when visitors Swindon Town come to town.
