Jay McEveley, in many ways, doesn’t need to prove too much too anyone but even so he had had to earn a contract with Milton Keynes Dons during a trial spell this summer.

Having played at the very highest level for club and country, with Blackburn Rovers and Derby County in the premier league and Scotland at international level, the defender found himself without a club this summer after his release by Swindon Town.

McEveley was already known to Karl Robinson, however he still wanted the 29-year-old to earn a deal and it looks like he has a very good chance as he is certainly impressing the boss.

With defence, in the left back and central defensive areas, needing strengthening McEveley ticks the boxes that the boss wants ticking.

Unfortunately for him, and MK Dons, financial constraints prevent a deal from being done just yet, Robinson told the official website: ‘He’s someone who can play left-back and left centre-half and we are looking to add strength in that area.

‘He knows that Lewie has been an ever present at left-back for this Football Club for many years. We’ve had a good chat and he knows where are at and I know where he’s at.

‘We can’t do anything just yet due to where we are with the financial fair play ruling, so it’s a case of seeing how things go. He’s a great lad and a very talented player. It’s not out of the question.’

McEveley has featured in all three of the pre-season games to date and impressed so it will be interesting to see just how long he will be willing to wait for a deal, but all being well something can be sorted out?
