Dean Lewington has admitted that last Sunday was one of the best days of his career as MK Dons leapfrogged Preston into second place and secured automatic promotion to the Championship for 2015-16.

Having scored twice in the deciding game that saw us avoid the play off battles with us beating Yeovil five nil in the curtain closer, he explained to the Official Site that it was definitely up there with some of his best Dons moments.

‘It`s up there as one of my best days at the Club. The cup games are always great but they are just one off, whereas this has been a whole year`s work and, for that, it`s more satisfaction that elation. I remember when we won League 2, I had a smile on my face all summer. I`ve got a host of emotions right now and it just needs to sink in – I`m sure when I`m sitting on a beach somewhere it finally will!’

Lewington goes on to say that with our aim this season being promotion to have finally achieved that is a great feeling and a great success and having kept ourselves more than in the mix over the course of the season, the run we put together over the final ten matches was a delight as everything seemed to click for us again.

As for his own contribution to the win with the brace, he joked.

‘I haven`t scored twice since I was a kid – when I was eight or nine, I was prolific! People are saying to me (first) was the best ever scored at stadiummk!’

With it being a comfortable victory as the game drew to a close, Lewington went on to admit it was a strange feeling on the pitch seeing out that game, because it was difficult not to wonder if we’d done it and what was going on elsewhere.

‘It was a strange feeling but it was nice just knowing we`d done our job. If that news would have come through and it still had been 0-0 then it would have been edgy, but the fact we were four up meant we could enjoy the last few minutes.’

The game also marked his 609 appearance for the club, but he wanted to mostly thank the fans for their efforts full stop, but especially in helping the team to victory this season.

‘A massive thanks to you. A lot of you have been here from the start and you should enjoy this because it`s been a good season and these don`t come around very often. We`re lucky to have fantastic fans here that stay with the team the whole way. We really appreciate the support and it`s just nice to just repay them back.’
